Beloved Mother, Sister and Grandmother, 84

Private funeral services were held for Mrs. Susanna (née Hoffer) King, 84, of Nutley, NJ who passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.    

Mrs. King was born in Basel, Switzerland.  Hoffmann-La Roche, known today as Roche, brought the family to the United States from Switzerland, in 1941. They traveled by train, passing through occupied France and Spain, to Portugal, and continued by ship from Lisbon to New York via Havana, Cuba and Miami. Susanna had her 4th birthday during the trip. She Moved to Nutley, NJ, in 1947 from Great Notch.
 

Susanna attended Good Counsel High School in Newark and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. She later attended Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture for a short period. She studied to become an artist and illustrator.
 

She lived in Montreal during the winter of 1960, and then in Tuxedo Park, NY, where she designed the cover of the school magazine and was active within local art groups.

In 1966, she moved to England, initially to London, and in 1968, to a small village in East Sussex.  During that time, she worked for a design firm in Nutley, UK, where she designed merchandise for Hanna Barbara characters and more.  Susanna was a caring person and contributed to the local community by spending her spare time delivering meals-on-wheels and by engaging the elderly in artistic activities. After she retired, she returned to Nutley, NJ, to care for her aging mother. Whilst in Nutley, she was involved in the Nutley Art Group at the Nutley Historical Society.
 

She was married twice and had three children. Two survive her, Ayeau King and Michael King.  Nils King pre-deceased her. She is also survived by her brother Bernard Hoffer and three grandchildren.
