Beloved Husband, Brother, Father and Grandfather, 59
Sargeant Rafael Ramos, Jr., 59, of Westwood, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Hackensack University Medical Center. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge Street, Newark on Monday, January 29 at 10:30 a.m. The interment will be at the Cedar Park and Beth El Cemeteries, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus with military honors.
Rafael was born Newark, NJ and resided in Westwood, NJ. He joined the Newark Police Division on February 4, 1991, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2022. Rafael later served as a liaison at the U.S. Marshal Service and successfully fulfilled various assignments at the 3rd, 4th and 5th Precincts, the Fugitive Apprehension Team, the Office of Professional Standards, and the Crime Scene Unit, where he fulfilled his final assignment. He was a highly respected Supervisor who was loved and respected by his colleagues and friends. Rafael also served his country honorably in the United States Army.
Among many honors received by Rafael were the U.S. Marshal - Fugitive Task Force Officer of the Year Award, Hispanic Law Enforcement Honor and Merit Awards, NJ State Law Enforcement Meritorious Award, September 11 Service Award and the F.O.P. Valor Award.
Rafael loved to travel with the love of his life, his wife Melissa, and enjoyed spending time with his loving family and friends.
He is survived by beloved wife Melissa Ramos; his children, Timmy and Megan; his dear sister Janette; his grandchildren; his goddaughter, his cherished cousins Neidita and Moraima, as well as many other family and close friends; his extended family in Puerto Rico and the Bronx, NY; his mother-in-law Indra (Mama) along with many loving in-laws.
Rafael is predeceased by his parents Rafael and Auria (nee Martinez) Ramos, his siblings Angel Ramos (2021), Olga Palmer, Daisy Pelt and Joseph Ramos.
