Mario was born in Prunella Reggio, Calabria Italy. He emigrated to America in 1952 on the USS Constitution and resided with family in Newark, NJ. He was very grateful to have the opportunity to come to America and make a good life for himself, and that’s exactly what he did. Mario went to night school to learn English, sheet metal fabrication and welding and eventually opened a machine shop with his brothers in 1972, Unilite Inc. in Nutley, NJ. He lived his life for his family. They were always his priority.
Mario met the love of his life Carmela in 1956 and they were married on May 7, 1960. He loved her immensely and was the greatest husband. Together they made a beautiful life. They started their life as a married, couple on Harrison Street in Bloomfield where they raised their three children. They moved to Cedar Grove in 1998.
Mario had a heart of gold. He was always there to help. He always gave us the best advice. We always felt safe and loved when around him. He was an amazing father and also a wonderful grandfather. He played soccer when he was younger and loved to listen to Italian music and talk about Italy. He had a strong Catholic faith with devotions to Saint John the Baptist, St. Gerard and the Madonna of the Mountain.
He is survived by his daughter Maria McMann and her husband Jim, his sons Michael and his wife JoEllen, and John and his wife MaryJo; his loving grandchildren Samantha, Mario, Michelle, Michael, Gia, Marissa, Julia and Nicholas; his seven cherished great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Rose; his many cousins which he adored; and his extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to St. Gerard in care of St. Lucys Church, 118 7th Ave., Newark, N.J.would be appreciated.
