Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle and Cousin

Edward J. Sharkey, Jr., 89, of Nutley, NJ, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be at the  Biondi Funeral Home of Nutley, 540 Franklin Avenue, on Sunday, March 3, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Monday, March 4 at 8:00 a.m. There will be a funeral mass celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 17 Monsignor Owen Place, Nutley at 9:00 a.m. The interment will be at Glendale Cemetery, 28 Hoover Avenue, Bloomfield.

Edward was born and raised in Harrison, NJ to the late Edward J. Sharkey, Sr. and Elizabeth (Henry) Sharkey on July 21, 1934. He also resided in Newark and Bloomfield before moving to Nutley 50 years ago with his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Joan. He was a devoted husband, whose unwavering love for his wife was evident in every aspect of their life together. Their bond was a testament to the power of love and commitment. He adored his children, grandchildren, and sons-in-law, finding immense joy in their presence and cherishing every moment spent with them. His whole purpose in life was to do everything for his family. Edward began his career with United Parcel Service (UPS) as a driver and after many years retired as a manager. In his spare time, he enjoyed baseball, golfing, fishing and bowling. He was a passionate NY Yankees fan.

During his high school years he pitched for St. Michael’s in Newark, establishing many records. In his senior year he struck out 113 batters in 52 innings, while making First Team All-State for private schools. After graduation, he pitched for an All-Star Team consisting of All-Staters from Essex County. In his first nine inning game against Morris County All-Staters, he pitched a one-hitter, striking out 21 of 27 batters. In the Fall of 1953, he signed with the National League Philadelphia Phillies, pitching in their farm system.  After sustaining an injury, he returned home, got married and started his family.

He pitched in the Essex County Semi-Pro League for eight seasons, three with the South Orange Giants and five with the Nutley Colonels. He was able to compile a record of 85 wins and 27 losses. After his baseball career, he took up golf and fell in love with the game. He would often say if he knew about golf in the 50’s, he probably would not have played any other sports. He played to a 5 handicap for many years. Upon his retirement from UPS, he was able to practice more often, and as a result won three New Jersey State PGO Senior Opens in 1997, 1999 and 2001. His low round was a 65 at Henricks Field Golf Course in Belleville.

Edward is survived by his beloved children Michael P. Sharkey, Joan M. Tartell and her husband Gary, Mary Chiaramonte and her husband Christopher, and Patricia E. Paton and her husband Gary; his cherished grandchildren Matthew S. Paton, Jennifer L. Paton, and Nicholas A. Paton; his niece Lisa Sharkey and his nephews Brian Sharkey, Jamie Sharkey; his great-nephew Jamie Sharkey, Jr.; his cousin and lifelong best friend, Martin Henry; and his many dear friends and family.

Edward is predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Joan A. (nee Papson) Sharkey, his daughter Ellen A. Sharkey, and his brother Martin Sharkey.
