Diane Garrity Obituary

Diane Garrity

Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt & Cousin, 77

Mrs. Diane (nee Gursky) Garrity, 77, of Kearny, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.  Visitation will be at the Biondi Funeral Home of Nutley, 540 Franklin Avenue on Friday, February 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Saturday, February 17 at 9: 30 a.m.  There will be a funeral mass celebrated at Holy Family Church, 28 Brookline Avenue, Nutley at 10:30 a.m.  The entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington.

Diane was born to her parents Gladys (nee Kuhl) and Walter Gursky on November 13, 1946 in Bayonne, NJ.  She graduated Bayonne High School and briefly worked in RCA pressing records. Diane single-handedly raised her children before meeting the love of her life, Robert and then moving to Kearny.  They were married on New Year’s Day in 1983.  In 1978 she was the highest scoring woman applicant for the Bayonne Police Department, but that career was not meant to be.   Diane went on to various jobs to help support her family.  Most notably, she worked at the bowling alley snack area where she lovingly helped with the disabled children that came in to bowl each week.

Diane was a very talented bowler and never let her age or gender stop her.  Diane participated in many tournaments winning most of them, and passed her knowledge of the game on to her grandkids who went on to bowl in high school.

Robert’s fondest memory is during a bowling tournament they were both in, he left to visit his brother in the close-by nursing home, and she knocked him out of the tournament with her scores.  She ultimately won the whole tournament and beat out the younger generation who doubted her skill.

Her grandchildren fondly remember her along with Robert at all of their baseball, soccer, and basketball games as well as all of their band, marching band and choir concerts.  They never missed one.  They especially loved the Florida vacation with their grandparents when they were younger as they were spoiled unlimitedly.

She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Robert Garrity; her devoted daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Matthew Cugliari of Nutley, NJ; her cherished grandsons Matthew C. and Christopher M.; her loving younger brother Walter Gursky and wife Marianne; and her many loving nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her loving aunt Vicky Zemeckis who was always there to lend a helping hand, and her many dear cousins, especially Lennie Zemeckis and Vickie Lastrina.
